Moving Prep Checklist (Canada)

Moving is easier when you pack less. This checklist keeps you focused: declutter first, pack in a clear order, and avoid the common “everything is in random boxes” problem.

Updated 2026-02-04 Best for rentals, first moves, downsizing

Phase 1: Declutter before you touch boxes

Your best “moving hack” is removing items that do not need to travel. Use fast categories so you don’t get stuck.

  • Kitchen duplicates: extra mugs, gadgets, mismatched containers. Use: Kitchen checklist.
  • Closet quick wins: shoes that hurt, coats you never reach for. Use: Closet checklist.
  • Papers: recycle what you can, keep a small “moving folder”. Use: Documents.

Phase 2: Pack in a “setup order”

Packing is easiest when each box has a clear job. Label for the room and priority.

  • First-day kit: chargers, meds, toiletries, kettle/coffee, towels, bedding, basic tools.
  • Kitchen basics: 2 plates, 2 bowls, 2 mugs per person, one pan, one knife, one cutting board.
  • Label system: Room + priority (P1, P2, P3). Only P1 gets opened in the first 24 hours.
  • Photo reminder: take a quick photo of cable setups and the contents of important boxes.

Phase 3: Admin tasks (Canada essentials)

Every move has a few official tasks. Keep them in one small “Moving” folder so you can find them quickly.

  • Mail: set up mail forwarding early if you need it.
  • Utilities: schedule end/start dates (hydro, internet, tenant insurance).
  • Address updates: make a short list: bank, employer, subscriptions, healthcare, school.
